British Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have joined forces with France's air force in a combined operation against an underground arms cache in Syrian territory employed by the Daesh militant organization, as stated by the UK's MoD.

The site, pinpointed through reconnaissance, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was located in hills just north of the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our aircraft used Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels leading to the site... initial indications indicate the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian casualties in the operation late on Saturday and every plane involved returned to base without incident, the MoD added.

The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - established militant control over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This operation shows our UK leadership, and determination to operate in unison with our partners, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their violent and radical beliefs in the Middle East," the British Defence Secretary the minister said.

RAF aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted comeback" of Islamic State following its military defeat at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the ministry said.

"I extend gratitude to all the members of British forces participating in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," he added. "Including them were numerous British personnel on duty over the festive period. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who pose a risk to our way of life, demonstrates how our armed forces are ready to step up, throughout the year, keeping Britain secure domestically and powerful internationally."

In December, the United States armed forces executed what it described as a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an assault resulted in the deaths of two US troops and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN reports Daesh still has an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
